Thalia Almodovar may come off as a villain to some on VH1 Beauty Bar, the popular reality show about the hairstylists and makeup artists from the Inwood, Manhattan salon House of Dolls, but she sees no problem in it. She says her God-given talents are in make-up and stirring drama.
“I grew up watching Spanish soap operas and the villain always has the most fun,” she laughs. “Honestly, though, I’m a sweetheart once you get to know me.”
Now she’s out with Dashing Thalia, her collection of beauty products by Celfie Cosmetics. We spoke with the spicy Latina to learn more.
Now that the first season is out, are you happy with how you and your co-workers from the salon were portrayed on the show?
Overall it was an amazing experience. It was an honest look at the drama party of an Inwood beauty salon. We are five talented individuals with strong egos and personalities.

How do you feel about reality TV in general?
They are fun to watch. Much harder to be in!
Has the show helped or hurt your make-up career?
It has helped me tremendously. It has opened so many doors and for that, I am very grateful.
Let’s discuss make-up: where do you get your inspiration from?
I like make-up to look timeless, clean and natural with some glamour. J Lo and Kim K inspire me.
How long have you been a makeup artist?
I’ve been at this about 13 years now.
How did you get your start?
I attended beauty school in Boston but make-up artist Aridio Garcia taught me the real tricks of the trade.
What do you love most about make-up?
The colors! Also, the way it makes a girl feel when it’s on. I really believe that applying make-up is a form of art.
Did you imagine you would one day launch your own cosmetic line?
Isn’t it every girl’s dream? I can’t thank Celfie Cosmetics enough for the opportunity. They let me do my thing with this collection. They really incorporated all of my input.
What makes your lipsticks stand out from all the other brands on the market?
Well, first of all, because they’re mine! (Laughing) Also, did you notice my lipsticks have a mirror and a cute little LED light? They are perfect for applying make-up outside late at night or in a smoky club!
What is the most important beauty advice you can share?
Take off your make up every night and take care of your skin. Skin care is important if you want your make up to look flawless.
What’s the biggest beauty mistake?
Buying the wrong color foundation.
What do you never leave home without?
Eye shadow and a good concealer.
If you weren’t a make-up artist, what else would you do?
I would probably be an actress. I’m still young so who knows?
