Music Bear Tony Banks Raises The Static

Music Bear Tony Banks describes himself as a gay, black man with the fun of Missy Elliot, the swag of LL Cool J and the dance moves of Heavy D.

In his music, he tries to stay true to who he is as a man and an artist. You’ll rarely, if ever, hear him rhyming about “Popping Bottles” (he barely drinks) or “Fighting Bitches” (not his style).  In his upcoming album, “Yes Homo,” he tackles issues like love, lust, partying, the state of hip-hop and police brutality.  It’s meant to be a full depiction of what its like to be a black, gay, male, hip-hop artist in 2017.

The first single, “Static,” can be summarized as funky hip-hop with a message. “In relationships you must have the wisdom to know when enough is enough,” he explains.   “You gotta have the courage to make change and the strength to stand up on your own two feet and press forward.”

Music Bear knows whereof he speaks.  He and his husband are currently in the midst of divorce.  We spoke with him to learn more.

Interview Tom Gallagher

What caused the split between you and your husband?  Did the relationship go static?

So many reasons.  Sometimes people grow apart.  We didn’t have the type of “Static” relationship that I talk about in the song. That Static is more about destroying yourself and expecting me to stay around and watch it. Too many people are in those types of relationships and stay because they don’t feel like they can do better or they fear being alone. You have to do what’s best for you in this life.

Do you remember the moment you realized you ain’t got time for that?

I never had a moment like that. It was just time for us to go in separate directions in life.

So no regrets from the relationship?

I have no regrets. I’m a strong believer in everything happening for a reason. Being in that relationship lead me down the path of being an artist and following my dreams. For that, I thank him and will always love him.

What is like to be single again?
Who said I was single? You calling me ugly?

(Laughing) No, I was about make my move.
I’m currently in a new relationship and looking forward to the future.

Will you do anything differently this time around?
Every relationship is different and requires applying different skills in order to make it work. As humans, we should always be sharpening up our skills.  I’m just happy he loves to cook…I ain’t got time for that.

That’s a good quality!  What else do two guys have to do to keep their relationship from going static?
Let each other know how much you love and care about your relationship. Show that love everyday. Continue to get to know each other and stay in constant communication. It’s so important! If you are on the same trajectory in life, then keep going. But if you find yourself going in different directions, then support each other on your individual journeys.
