Interview Alicia Avery

Tell us a little bit about your beginnings. How did you get your start as a recording artist?
Becoming a recording artist has been my dream of dreams since I was about 6 or 7. I spent my entire childhood in local & regional theater, but knew I wanted to be on records. A few years ago I was introduced to a dance DJ starting his own label. I shared some material with him and soon after became his 1st released artist on the independent record label.

We love your song “Faces.”  It’s such a powerful anthem and has a great message. What inspired you to write it?
My reflection in the mirror. The people I pass everyday on the streets of New York. Kids everywhere that struggle with self love & self acceptance.

Who are some of your musical inspirations and how have they influenced your music?
Brandy, Britney, Beyonce, Whitney, Mariah, Janet, Michael, India Arie, Nikka Costa,Tevin Campbell … the list is kinda endless. They all represent stages of my emotional development. My attachment to music & self expression. Their artistry & work ethic greatly influenced me. Their ability to standout.

We saw on your Facebook page that you’re participating in Broadway Bares. Tell us a little but about how you got involved and how people can donate!
Yes! It’s officially my first time performing. I’ve been many times, and always love attending, but never in the show. So this is very special to me. My best friend Kellen Stancil is one of the lead choreographers ..he needed a last minute addition and asked me to be a part of his presentation. Please donate at www.broadwaycares.org

Whats next for Mila Jam? Is there an album in the works?
I’ll be headlining my very own JAM POP float for the televised NYC PRIDE parade on June 25th, sponsored by Northwell Hospital in conjunction with visual artist extraordinaire Ben Copperwheat. Yes, There is new music in the works & a few exciting acting opportunities..
