$UBSCRIBE – THE NEW DIGITAL SEX ECONOMY: Fitnesspapi

While they may not be mainstream topics of conversation or household names just yet, subscription websites like OnlyFans.com are becoming more and more familiar to LGBTQ communities throughout the world. As early as the internet existed, the monetization of sex work online has proliferated, from early porn download sites to more contemporary video sharing and modern webcam services. Selling subscription services that allow users to view videos or watch live webcam feeds of professional or amateur sex workers has indeed flourished online for years already. So while OnlyFans and similar websites are not particularly new in concept, they perhaps offer a more user-friendly and trendy vehicle for a particular type of sex work, allowing a wider group of people to use the site as content creators and consumers. Here in the US, gay men and trans women seem to be driving the growth of these apps as the landscape of sex work is changing and cultural attitudes within queer communities are shifting and evolving. In particular, OnlyFans and sites like it appear to be emerging as a path for LGBTQ sex workers of color to potentially completely revolutionize not only the nature of their sex work but also to reap unprecedented financial rewards.

Why did you decide to create an OnlyFans account?
Everyone on IG was always asking me to do one so after thinking it over, I decided to give the fans what they wanted.
Were you concerned about being “exposed” or the social/cultural stigma associated with sex work/pornography?
Honestly, yes. That’s why I hesitated for so long. But what I did to make sure it doesn’t affect my career (to the best of my ability) is make sure I don’t use my real name. Anyone at work who searches my real name won’t find me anywhere online.
How do you market & promote your account?
(Instagram.com/fitnesspapi_) I have 22.9k followers so promoting my OF in my bio and occasionally on my story helps gain subs
About how many monthly subscribers do you have?
At my peak, over 300 subs. Currently just reached 200 again. There was a dip in content due to many factors, but new content is flowing regularly now and I’m sure I can reach 300-400 again.
How frequently do you post?
In the last 2 weeks, 7 new videos have dropped. On the regular though, I try to post 2-3 times a week.

How has having your OnlyFans account changed your financial situation?
Haha, yes. Big yes. OF allowed me to pay off my maxed-out credit card

Do you think an OnlyFans account is more worth it/better than a more traditional career in pornography with a studio?
Yeah, I like the freedom. I can post whatever I want. I do ask for feedback to help create content that my subs actually want to see. It’s less pressure doing my own thing and managing my own pay.
Do you see yourself continuing to use OnlyFans for the foreseeable future or is it something more for the short term?
Once I’m making 6 figures at my day job, we’ll reevaluate this question haha.
