MERLOT – “Bad For You”

Photography: Mike Sullivan

We had to pleasure to take a sip of NYC nightlife’s newest personality & fashionista, Merlot.

Find out why he is truly “Bad For You”!

Earlier this year you released your 1st single Bad For You, which truly gagged us!  When did you start working on this & who did you work on it with?

Thank you so much ! I actually wrote this song about a year before it came out when I took a trip to L.A. to work with a producer I had met here in New York. He showed me a bunch of different bare-bones beats he had, and I heard this one track and new I had to bring it to life. After I wrote the melodies and the words, we collaborated and made it the full song it is today!

Who are some of your musical inspirations and how have they influenced your music?

I’m very inspired by the soulfulness of artists like John Legend, and even older ones like Sam Cooke & Marvin Gaye. In my music, I always want to keep the sound of my voice on the sultrier and (hopefully) sexier side, and then I bring in my modern day influences like house music and pop for the production.

We have seen some gender fluidity in popular hetero artists in relation to wardrobe choices & comedic efforts. Do you think these moments help or hurt?
I feel that nothing like that hurts if it comes from a sincere place with the artist. There are obvious no-no’s with the comedic aspect of course, and we’ve all seen popular cis-het instagrammers use gender fluidity to make fun of cis women and trans women alike, and those instances are definitely cheap and hurtful. But I can’t tell a straight artist that they have to dress or act a certain way just as I wouldn’t want anyone dictating how I should present myself, as long as it’s authentic.

You’ve been quite a presence in queer nightlife scene in New York City. How has that influenced your music & style?

Thank you again ! Nightlife in New York has definitely opened my eyes to loads of style and art that I had never seen before. I’m constantly inspired by the people and artists I meet around town, and it’s given me a place to freely express myself however I choose. I’m driven to take more risks than I ever would’ve and I’m planning on bringing those risks into my fashion and music.
Favorite party in New York City?
Anything Frankie Sharp throws. Also, “Strut” at Acme on Tuesday’s was the first party I ever went to in NY, and the first venue I performed at here, so it will always sort of feel like home to me.

Grindr or Scruff?
In person //

Shave or WOOF
WOOF.

Will we be seeing you at any Pride events this year?
I’m hosting a big party with Frankie Sharp on Pride weekend at the Marquee, and Lil Kim will be performing! But other than that, I’ll do what I do every Pride and let the wind blow wherever it may.

What else can we expect from you in 2018?
I’m dropping my first music video soon and I’m definitely releasing much more music. I’m also really excited about a few photoshoots coming up, so stay tuned !
