Introducing The Baldwin Archives
Tory Devon Smith portrays James Baldwin in a reimagining of the author's iconic interview.
The Baldwin Archives will be a reenactment of a James Baldwin’s interview from 1963. The sections reenacted express Baldwin’s perception on the universal truth about life; the virtue of respect for your fellow human being. In times of such ambiguity and strife, a reminder to care for one another is significant.
Led by actor Tory Devon Smith, with a team of gifted filmmakers, this new short will bring the story of famed author, James Baldwin, to cinematic life.
Tory’s fascination with James Baldwin began years ago with his novel Giovanni’s Room, the story of an American man who comes to Paris and explores his life, and relationships with men, women, and the city itself.
However his historical interest into Baldwin’s life became a new reality; his work and essays and novels, but most importantly he wanted to know about his family, his friends, his lovers, his existence as a person. How did he live with such abandon at that time?
The Baldwin Archives will be the first stage in bringing this man’s story to life on the screen. The short will be a reimagining of a James Baldwin interview from 1963, where he discusses his perspective on the virtue of respect for your fellow human being; something Tory explains he found universal in an era of such uncertainty and social strife.
