Told Ya! Bella Thorne May Have Messed Up Onlyfans For The Rest Of Us!

Content creators claim celebrity presence on the site may be prompting changes that could effect their coins.

We kinda called it in May…….

In particular, I wrote about the growing legitimization as more and more “celebrities” realize the potential for a cash grab. Many of the accounts of celebrities, influencers, and the InstaFamous utilize tactics akin to scamming by capitalizing on their notoriety and the thirst for explicit content, only to offer teases or the actual sexual material behind further paywalls.

While I don’t really blame anyone for maximizing profitability using the mechanisms of the site, with the latest case of Bella Thorne we see how this can become problematic for actual sex workers (for many of whom this site may be their only source of income during this pandemic).

Because of Thorne’s “scam” (pretending to offer nude photos behind a $200 paywall and then not delivering, triggering thousands to demand refunds) and her unprecedented payout, OnlyFans has restructured payment mechanisms in various parts of the world, including countries in South America and the Caribbean. The site placed a cap on tip amounts as well as delaying payouts from 7 to 30 days, which could potentially devastate already marginalized sex workers who depend on this money to survive.

The people who will be directly and most affected by these changes will be Black & brown, queer and trans folks who are already existing at the margins of societies, many of whom have been able to create safer sex work for themselves via the site as opposed to in person escorting. This has been particularly life saving for many trans women of color all over the world. When rich celebrities dabble in these ventures without any of the risks associated with actual sex work or the social stigma, they take up space where they could instead uplift sex workers and intentionally push for its decriminalization.
